Help For Choosing Your Business Field

Choose Your Field

Many people are not quite sure which Business Field to choose. That’s OK. The following information may be a Help For Choosing Your Business Field:

Choosing Your Business Field

Choosing the area of business that you are going to set up is not always easy. Your choice should be based on one or more of the following:

    • Something that you know a lot about
    • Something that you are very interested in and passionate about
    • Something that you are willing to do a lot of research on

There are countless choices, sometimes, making it hard to choose just one. If you have easily chosen your field, that’s great. If not, you can use the following technique to help you begin your focusing process:

List Your Life Achievements

Create a word processing document and add information, as follows:

  1. Open the program of your choice in order to create your document.
  2. Name your document:  My Business Field (centered, 20 pt. font, bolded).
  3. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  4. Name your first Heading:  My Life Achievements (left align, 14 pt. font, bold & underlined).
  5. Leave a blank line.
  6. Indent. Then, create a Sub-Heading named:  Jobs (12 pt. font, bold & underlined).
  7. Leave a blank line.
  8. Indent further, and begin numbering.
  9. List all of the jobs that you have ever held throughout your life, regardless of how trivial. Begin with any job that you did for which you earned money, from doing chores around the house to that lemonade stand you ran on the weekends to your babysitting jobs. Continue adding to the list, all of the jobs that you held while working for others, as well as any businesses that you have owned.
  10. Bold and underline any job in your list that you enjoyed immensely.
  11. Leave a couple of blank lines
  12. Decrease indent so that the next heading will align with the previous one.
  13. Create a new Sub-Heading named:  Other Life Skills (12 pt. font, bold & underlined).
  14. Leave a blank line.
  15. Indent again, and begin numbering again.
  16. Now, list all of the skills that you have learned well throughout your life. These can be job related or not. They might be things like: child care, organization, filing, cooking, problem solving, home remodeling (you can break home remodeling down in specific areas, like: plumbing, electrical, framing, trim work, etc.), etc.
  17. Bold and underline any skills in your list that you either enjoyed immensely or were especially good at.
  18. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  19. Decrease indent, and create a third Sub-Heading named:  Hobbies & Other Interests (12 pt. font, bold & underlined).
  20. Leave a blank line.
  21. Indent again, and begin numbering again.
  22. Now, list all of the hobbies and special interests that you once were, or are still, very passionate about. This might include things like: sports that you played, stamp collecting, crafts, reading books, or even astronomy.
  23. Bold and underline any items in your list that you either enjoyed immensely or were especially good at.
  24. Save your document.

Likely Field Candidates

Now, you will narrow down your lists to the most likely candidates for your choice of a Field, as follows:

  1. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  2. Decrease indent so that your next heading lines up with your first heading:  My Life Achievements.
  3. Name your next Heading:  Likely Field Candidates (left align, 14 pt. font, bold & underlined).
  4. Leave a blank line.
  5. Copy your (3) sub-headings from your first heading above and & Paste in the next line.
  6. Copy all bolded items under each sub-heading above & Paste into your new sub-headings areas.
  7. Look for patterns that reveal your style or approach to resolving problems. This might include things like, doing the more difficult tasks first or last on a list, creating to do lists, or outlining a list of potential solutions to a problem before tackling it.
  8. Review your (3) lists and make your best choice for your Field. This can come from any of your (3) lists or can be something completely new that you think of, based on your skills. Make your choice based on all of your information, skills, patterns, interests, etc., it is time to make a choice. Remember, you are choosing a Field right now that you will be working in for quite a while, so make sure that it is one that really interests you and that you can see yourself writing a lot about on a consistent basis for years, not weeks.
  9. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  10. Name your next Heading:  My Field:  (and list your Field here).
  11. Leave a blank line.
  12. Indent, and create a Sub-Heading named:  My Skills.
  13. Copy & Paste all of the skills that you have relating to this field (from your previous list to this area). Then, add any new ones that you can think of to the list. Any or all of these may become ideas for future posts. These can include the obvious things, such as: reading, writing, shipping, label making, etc. You may also include things like: organizational skills, creativity, dexterity, and others as well.
  14. Save your document and minimize it.

Create a New Word Processing Document

Once you have made your Field choice, create a new word processing document, as follows:

  1. Open the program of your choice in order to create your document.
  2. Name your document:  My Online Business (centered, 20 pt. font, bolded) (You can later change the title to your Domain Name once it is chosen.). Some of the information that you record here will be helpful in completing later steps in the process, including:  Creating Your Business Plan.
  3. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  4. Name your first Heading:  My Domain Name:  (left align, 14 pt. font, bold & underlined). (You can add your Domain Name once it has been chosen.)
  5. Leave a couple of blank lines.
  6. Maximize your document:  My Life Achievements.
  7. From that document, Copy the Heading:  My Field: (along with your listed Field) & Paste it into your new document:  My Online Business.
  8. Leave a blank line.
  9. Now, Copy & Paste the Sub-Heading named:  My Skills, along with all of the listed Skills (from your first document to your new one).
  10. Save and Close both of the documents, and file both of these documents in a Folder named:  Website Information. (Save your original document:  My Life Achievements for future reference, just in case you change your mind on your choice of a Field or decide to create another website.)
